The Drager Polytron 8720 IR is a top explosion-proof transmitter that detects carbon dioxide CO2 in percent volume or ppm. The infrared Drager PIR 7200 sensor is at the heart, which can tolerate water submerging. Communications are three-wire 4 to 20 mA analogue output with relays, Modbus and Fieldbus make it usable with most control systems.

Efficient, reliable and rugged– the PIR 7200 has a stainless steel 316L enclosure and drift-free optics and can cope with the most extreme environments. The unique four-beam signal stabilizing system makes the sensor resistant to dust or dirt deposits on the optical surfaces. Built-in compensation means drift-free operation from age or climate. The measuring range can be freely adjusted between 0 – 2,000 ppm and 0 – 30% volume, enabling various applications. With data logging capability, logs measuring and event data from the past years.
Detection of carbon dioxide
Digital interfaces allow remote deployment of the Drager Polytron 8720. In addition to the standard HART communication system, the Fieldbus interfaces PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus™ H1, and Modbus RTU are also available. Integration with existing asset management systems such as PACTware™ is possible via DTM.
Same design, same operating principle
The Polytron 8720 belongs to the Polytron 8000 series. All transmitters in this series have a common design and interface, allowing for consistent operation and reduced training, commissioning, and maintenance. The LEDs are displayed in green, yellow, and red, providing alarm and status details. A display backlit shows status information. Gas readings are shown in operation. Operated through a magnetic wand over contact surfaces.
Three relays for controlling external equipment
As an option, the Polytron 8720 can also be supplied with three integrated relays. This enables you to use it as an independent gas detection system with two arbitrarily adjustable concentration alarms and one fault alarm. Audio alarms, signal lights, or similar devices can thus be controlled locally without an additional cable between the transmitter and central controller.
Safe, robust housing for every application
Polytron 8720 features a Class I, Div. 1 rated explosion-proof enclosure made from aluminium or stainless steel, making it suitable for a wide range of environmental conditions. A protection type “e” version includes a convenient docking station that allows installation in hazardous atmospheres without running conduit (where approved).
Make the impossible possible with the remote sensor
An available remote sensor conduit housing allows the PIR sensor to be installed up to 30 meters (100 feet) away from the Polytron transmitter. A special calibration flow cell accessory permits one person to calibrate a remote-mounted sensor from the transmitter fully.
